Organizing a Garage: 9 Quick Tips

Organizing a garage is one of those tasks that tends to get put off from spring cleaning, to summer cleaning, to fall cleaning, and beyond! It can be tough to remember that your garage is not a storage room where everything gets piled in the corners until your car is buried in a snowdrift of clutter. Cleaning and organizing a garage can be very beneficially in many ways, even ensuring that your junk-filled garage does not become home to spiders, rats, or snakes.

If you do not want to have clutter, or creatures living in your garage, bite the bullet, put on the work gloves, and get going with the following tips to guide you!

  • Build Shelves: A great way to help keep things neat and organized is to build shelves in your garage. Shelves can help with organizing a garage by keeping your floor clean and clear of clutter. Garage shelves do not generally need to be visually stunning; they can be more utilitarian in nature. You may want to build shelves yourself, but you can also find shelf kits at your local home improvement store that come with everything you need to get your garage tidied up.
  • Label Your Wares: Labeling everything can be really useful, with all the odds and ends that somehow converge in a garage. If you’re tired of drawers and bins full of a hodgepodge of nails, screws, and bolts, take the time to sort each piece by type and label your storage containers and shelves accordingly.
  • Paint the Floor: Painting your garage floor with epoxy paint will help keep it free of stains, minimize deterioration, and give your garage floor a tough finish for a showroom-style look. A garage can take a beating, so anything that will add durability to these quarters is helpful.
  • Create Zones: Your garage should be divided up according to how you are going to use it. Think carefully about what you want your garage to be used for, such as a workshop, gym, home garden center, a space for pets, etc.
  • Utilize Unused Space: Vertical and ceiling space should be utilized as much as possible. If you are hoping to keep your car parked in the garage, this rule is especially important. After all, you want to make sure that you aren’t running over things every time you try to park. Think about putting up pegs or hooks for such items as bicycles, cords, hoses, tools, rakes, strollers, and shovels. An outside-the-box way to handle sports gear (like basketballs) is to string up a hammock in the corner of the garage.
  • Lock Up Chemicals: When organizing a garage, make sure to store potentially hazardous chemicals to a well-ventilated, lockable cabinet to protect against curious children and inadvertent spills.
  • Start from Scratch: You could take everything out of your garage before reorganizing in order to visualize what you want to do. Looking at the space you have as a blank canvas can give you a better idea of what you’re working with.
  • Host a Yard Sale: You probably have many of your home’s misfit items stored somewhere in the garage. A yard sale can clear this clutter and earn you some cash. Better yet, hold a garage sale and save yourself the effort of lugging items out to the yard!

These are just a few ideas to help you get started organizing your garage. However, if you can’t find the time to do the cleaning yourself, then entrust the job to the experts. Garage cleaner services have the know-how and the right equipment to clean your garage in the way it should be cleaned – and you won’t have to lift a finger.
