Moving can be a hassle no matter how you handle it, especially in a large city like Chicago. The act of packing up all your belongings and relocating to a new home can leave you profoundly exhausted and overwhelmed. If you’re hoping to get your security deposit back, you will need to be responsible and leave your apartment cleaner than it was when you first moved in.

Here is a simple checklist of things to do before you hand in your keys


When it comes to walls, be sure to do the following. Remove all staples, nails, hooks or screws. Patch any holes left behind. The walls should be wiped down with warm water or a magic eraser to get rid of tape residues, dirt or markings of any kind.

Your 2016 Move-Out Checklist

Are you planning a move? If so, you probably already know that before you leave your rental unit for the last time, you’ve got to make sure it’s as clean as possible (especially if you’re counting on getting your security deposit back!) Check out the helpful checklist we use that will ensure you have the best move-out clean.  Though it may seem daunting, you need not worry. We are here to provide the elbow grease.

Overall To-Do’s:

  • Remove all nails and spackle over holes. Don’t forget to sandpaper smooth and paint, if needed.
  • Clean ceiling and wall fixtures
  • Dust all ledges.
  • Clean the windows – from the inside and outside (if possible)
  • Clean the door knobs and doors.
  • Clean walls and baseboards
  • Vacuum all floors
  • Get rid of all the cobwebs
