Shopping Around

For the environmentally conscious consumer, stores are increasingly carrying more cleaning products made from natural ingredients rather than those full of chemicals or fragrances. Look for products the EPA’s Safer Choice label, which indicates the product has been tested and verified to be environmentally friendly. Compared to other cleaning supplies, these products are safer for use around children and pets and better for the water supply, but perform comparably to their non-natural counterparts.

Do It Yourself

Also consider thinking outside the cleaning aisle and making your own household cleaning products. A spray bottle, vinegar, baking soda and hot water are all you need to clean almost any surface in your home with no chemical odors and at a fraction of the cost of store-bought cleansers.

A mixture of hot water and vinegar can cut through grease on stoves, counters, walls, windows and cupboards. This mixture is also effective in the bathroom, disinfecting tubs, shower curtains, sinks and more.

Soaking faucets and showerheads in vinegar can help remove buildup, and boiling water poured down the drain can clear out clogs without the use of chemicals products that can damage pipes. For extra drain cleaning power, pour baking soda down the drain, followed by vinegar. Let sit overnight and clear out with hot water.
