Your Holiday Cleaning Checklist: Getting a Chicago Home Guest-Ready

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, most Chicago homes host more people than they do the rest of the year, often with snow and road salt coming through the front door. Here’s how to get ready in stages, so the week before your guests arrive isn’t a scramble.
Two to Three Weeks Out
- Book any professional cleaning now. Late November and December dates fill quickly.
- Declutter entryways, closets and the guest room to make space for coats and luggage.
- Wash guest bedding and towels.
- Clean out the refrigerator to make room for holiday food.
The Week Before
- Deep clean the kitchen: inside the oven, the stovetop, the microwave and the fridge shelves. Our kitchen appliance guide walks through each one.
- Scrub guest bathrooms, including grout and shower glass.
- Dust light fixtures, ceiling fans and baseboards that guests will notice in daylight.
- Set out a boot tray and mat at every entrance for Chicago slush and salt.
The Day Before
- Do a quick vacuum and mop of the main living areas.
- Put fresh towels and supplies in each bathroom.
- Clear the counters and empty the dishwasher before cooking starts.
After the Party
Plan for cleanup the same way you plan for the party. A one-time cleaning the day after gets dishes, floors, bathrooms and spills handled before they set in. See our tips for tackling post-party cleanup.
